The distance in miles between two UK postcodes, by road and in a straight line, with the drive time. Or paste a whole list of journeys and get every distance at once, with a total for your mileage claim. Free, no account.
Quick answer
To find the distance between two postcodes, enter both below. You get the driving distance in miles (the route a car takes on the roads), the drive time, and the straight-line distance. Postcode districts such as CO10 work too. For expenses, paste a list of journeys, one per line, and you get each distance and the total road miles.
The road distance is what a car drives between the two postcodes, along the quickest route. It is the figure to use for travel and mileage. The straight-line distance, "as the crow flies", is always shorter and is what most radius searches use.
Paste your journeys for the month, one per line, and download the list with the road miles for each and the total. HMRC's approved mileage rates for cars and vans are 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p a mile after that.
Each postcode is placed at its centre, and the drive is worked out on OpenStreetMap's road network by our own routing, for normal traffic. A full postcode covers a handful of addresses, so the result is accurate to a few hundred metres; a district such as CO10 uses the centre of the whole district.
How do I find the distance between two postcodes?
Enter both postcodes above and choose "Work out the distance". You get the driving distance in miles, the drive time and the straight-line distance.
Is it the driving distance or as the crow flies?
Both. The main figure is the driving distance along the roads; the straight-line distance is shown underneath.
Can I work out the distances for a list of journeys?
Yes. Paste one journey per line (from, then to), or upload a CSV with the two postcodes in the first two columns. The first 25 are free straight away; enter a work email to do up to 2,000 and download them all.
What is the HMRC mileage rate?
For cars and vans, HMRC's approved mileage allowance is 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p a mile after that.
Does it work with postcode districts like CO10?
Yes. A district on its own is measured from the centre of the district, so the answer is approximate. A full postcode is more precise.
Is it free?
Yes. Single distances and lists of up to 25 journeys are free with no account; longer lists need a work email.
