How many people live within a 30-minute drive?

Type an address and pick 15, 30 or 45 minutes. You get the drive-time area on real roads and the people, households and household income inside it, from Census Bureau data. Add sites to compare them side by side. Free, no account.

Quick answer

To count the people within a drive time, draw the area you can reach on real roads in that many minutes (an isochrone), then add up the census tracts inside it. Enter up to five US addresses below to get, for each, the population, households, median and average household income and total household income within a 15, 30 or 45 minute drive, plus the people only that site reaches and every site together. Figures are from the American Community Survey 2020-2024.

Which sites are we sizing up?

One address per site. Compare up to 5 side by side.

Drive time

What you get for each site

The drive-time area on a map, its size in square miles, and inside it: the population, the number of households, the median and average household income, and all the household income in the area per year. With two or more sites you also get the people only that site reaches (its own catchment) and every site together, with each person counted once.

How the count works

The area is everywhere you can drive to in the time you pick, on real roads, with the weekday average delay for the area. A census tract counts when its centre of population falls inside the area. Tracts hold about 4,000 people, so the figures are close in towns and suburbs; at the rural edge of an area, where a tract can be miles across, a tract counts whole or not at all.

Where the data comes from

Population, households and household income for every census tract from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates (tables B01003, B11001, B19013 and B19025), placed at each tract's 2020 Census centre of population. Drive-time areas from our own routing on OpenStreetMap roads. Median household income for an area is estimated from its tracts' medians, weighted by households; the average is exact (all household income divided by households).

FAQs

How many people live within a 30-minute drive of an address?

Type the address above and pick 30 minutes. It varies enormously: about 1.9 million people live within a 30-minute weekday drive of the White House, and about 19,000 within 30 minutes of Main Street in Ava, Missouri (ACS 2020-2024).

Can I compare several locations?

Yes, up to five side by side. Two are free with no email; enter a work email to compare three to five. Each gets its own figures, the people only it reaches, and the total for all of them together.

Is this the same as a radius?

No. A radius is a circle; a drive time follows the roads, so it stretches along highways and stops at rivers. For a 1, 3, 5 and 10 mile radius for a whole list of addresses, use the population within a radius tool.

Which drive times can I pick?

15, 30 or 45 minutes, which covers most trade-area and site-selection questions.

Does it work outside the US?

Not yet: the figures are US Census Bureau data. The drive-time map itself works in the US and Great Britain.

Do you keep my addresses?

They're used to draw the areas and count the people. They aren't shared or sold.
