Find the nearest location for each customer

Paste or upload your customers, list your branches, stores, depots or offices, and get the nearest one to every customer, by straight line or by road. A map, the share each location serves, and your file back. Free, no account.

Quick answer

To find each customer's nearest location, measure from every customer to every location and keep the shortest: by straight line (great-circle miles) for speed, or by road, where the quickest drive can belong to a location that's further away as the crow flies. Paste your locations and your customers below. It works with US addresses and ZIP codes, UK addresses and postcodes, and latitude and longitude.

Step 1 of 2 · about a minute

Where are your locations?

Your branches, stores, depots or offices: one per line, up to 25. Give each a name before a colon if you like.

Who are your customers?

Or paste one address, ZIP or postcode per line

Nearest by

As the crow flies. Fast for any size of list.

US addresses and ZIP codes, UK addresses and postcodes, or latitude and longitude. Only the address is used.

What you get

For every customer: its nearest location, the distance in miles (and the drive time when you measure by road), and the next nearest location, so you can see who sits between two. Then a table of how many customers each location is nearest to, with the average and furthest distance, and a map with every customer coloured by its nearest location. The download keeps every column of your own file.

Straight line or by road?

Straight line is instant for any size of list and right for territories and rough catchments. By road measures the three nearest locations in a straight line on real roads and keeps the quickest drive, which matters where rivers, motorways or mountains get in the way. Drive times are weekday estimates: road time with the measured average delay for the area.

Where the data comes from

US addresses are placed with our own US address data, UK addresses and postcodes with Ordnance Survey and OpenStreetMap data, and every row shows how sure we are of its location. Road distances come from our own routing on OpenStreetMap roads. Nothing goes to a paid map service.

FAQs

How do I find the closest store to each customer in Excel?

You can, with a distance formula for every customer and store and a MIN lookup, but it gets slow past a few hundred rows and it's straight line only. Paste the same two lists here and you get each customer's nearest store, by straight line or by road, as a file you can open in Excel.

How many customers and locations can I use?

Up to 5,000 customers and 25 locations at a time. The first 25 customers show straight away; enter a work email to match the rest and download the whole file.

Does it work with UK postcodes?

Yes. Customers and locations can be UK addresses or postcodes on their own (a postcode is placed at its centre), US addresses or ZIP codes, or latitude and longitude.

Can I name my locations?

Yes. Put the name before a colon: "Dallas branch: 2100 Ross Ave, Dallas, TX 75201". Without one, the address is the name.

How is drive time worked out?

On real roads, from our own routing on OpenStreetMap roads, with the weekday average delay measured for the area (Texas A&M's Urban Mobility Report in the US, the Department for Transport's in Great Britain).

Do you keep my list?

Your addresses are used to run the match. They aren't shared or sold.
