🗺️ Today's States Higher or Lower (#1): Does Louisiana have more or fewer Chick-fil-A restaurants per person than Massachusetts? Ten questions, about a minute: https://get-instamaps.com/games/states-higher-or-lower?utm\_source=newsletter&utm\_medium=game

Email can't run a game, so newsletters link to it. Morning Brew runs its game at the bottom of every issue.

Teaching or running a library guide? [The classroom page](/games/classroom) has practice by topic and questions to start a lesson.

## How it works

1. 1You see one state and how many of something it has per person: tornadoes, golf courses, Costco warehouses.
2. 2Guess whether the next state has more or fewer, per person. Bigger states don't win by being big.
3. 3The second state carries into the next round with a new topic: ten states, ten topics, about a minute.
4. 4Share your grid. Everyone gets the same game each day, so you can compare.

## FAQ

### Where do the numbers come from?

From the same counts as our 50-state rankings: NOAA for tornadoes, the USGS wind turbine and solar databases, the EPA for Superfund sites, the ATF for licensed gun dealers, the FAA for heliports, the Defense Department for military bases, CMS for critical access hospitals, OpenStreetMap for golf courses, and AllThePlaces for store chains. Each state's count is divided by its Census Bureau 2024 population, so a small state can beat a big one.

### Why per person?

Because raw counts mostly tell you which states are biggest. Per person, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Vermont and Alaska keep turning up at the top, which is the surprising part.

### When does a new game come out?

At midnight where you are, like Wordle. Everyone playing on the same date gets the same ten questions. Past games stay playable on the past games page.

### Can I put it on my site, in my newsletter or in a class?

Yes, free. Copy the embed code above for a web page, or the one-liner for a newsletter (email can't run a game, so it links to it). Teachers and librarians can use the classroom page, which has practice by topic.

### Is it free? Do I need an account?

Free, no account, no email. Your answers and streak are kept in your own browser. We count plays and scores, without names, to see how the game is doing.

### Who makes it?

InstaMaps, which puts addresses on maps for people who work in spreadsheets. The game is made of the same data as our state rankings and maps, which reporters and newsletters cite.
