Plotting addresses one at a time in Google My Maps does not survive the next update to the list. Student data is sensitive, and you only want to send what the map needs. ## How you'd use it 1. Paste the address column into the free geocoder. The first 100 come back at once with a confidence score on every row, and open as a map. Enter your email for the rest of a longer list. 2. Or keep it in Google Sheets: =GEOCODE(B2:B400) adds coordinates, and =INSTAMAP(A1:C401, "Students", "Grade") returns a live map link with pins colored by grade. 3. Install the free InstaMaps add-on, then type =GEOCODE(B2:B400) next to the address column to add coordinates, and =INSTAMAP(A1:C401, "Students") for a live map link. Include the header row in the map range. Or paste the addresses into the free [geocoder](/tools/geocoder) on our website and open the result as a map. ### Is it safe to map student addresses? Send only what the map needs: the address and a grade or school column are enough, so leave out names, student IDs and anything else personal. Addresses you place are sent to our servers, and we keep a record of each run, including a sample of addresses, as our [privacy policy](/privacy) explains. A map link stores the rows on it so the link works, and anyone with the link can open it, so share it as carefully as the sheet. If your district has rules about student data and outside services, check them first. ### How many addresses can I map? The web geocoder places US addresses free: the first 100 come back at once and the rest of a longer list after you enter your email. In Google Sheets, one =INSTAMAP map takes up to 500 rows, so split a bigger roster by school or grade. For more than 400 rows, add coordinates from Extensions > InstaMaps > Add coordinates to this sheet. ### Can I color the map by grade or school? Yes. Give =INSTAMAP the name of a column as its third argument, for example =INSTAMAP(A1:D401, "Students", "Grade"), and each pin takes the color of its grade. The range must start at the header row so the column name can be found. ### Can I find which school district each student lives in? Yes. Paste the addresses into the free [school district lookup](/tools/school-district-by-address).
