# How to Geocode 10,000 Addresses for Free (US, No API Key)

15 October 2026·7 min read

To geocode 10,000 addresses for free, upload the file to the [InstaMaps batch geocoder](/tools/geocoder), enter a work email when it asks, and leave the tab open while it runs. US addresses are free, up to 20,000 rows per list and 25,000 a day, so a 10,000-row file fits in one run.

Big jobs are common. About a quarter of the CSV files uploaded to our geocoder have more than 1,000 rows. This guide covers how to run one, how long it takes, how to check the results, and the free and paid alternatives.

TL;DR

* →Upload the 10,000 rows to the free InstaMaps geocoder as a CSV or Excel file and pick the address column.
* →The first 100 come back at once. Enter a work email and the other 9,900 run in batches of 100 while the tab stays open.
* →Limits: up to 20,000 rows per list and 25,000 US addresses a day per person, free. 10,000 fits in one run.
* →In October 2026, lists of about 1,700 US addresses finished in 2 to 4 minutes, and a 6,700-row list in about 25 minutes.
* →The free US Census batch geocoder also takes 10,000 records per file, in a fixed five-column format. Google's Geocoding API gives 10,000 free requests a month, then charges $5 per 1,000.
* →Download the CSV, or open all 10,000 as a live map you can share.

## Geocode 10,000 addresses in five steps

This works for US street addresses. Outside the US, see the limits below.

1. Step 1 - Save the list as CSV or Excel
One address per row, with a header row. Split columns (street, city, state, ZIP) are fine.
2. Step 2 - Upload it
Open the [free geocoder](/tools/geocoder), choose Upload CSV or Excel, and pick the street or address column. The tool adds city, state and ZIP from their own columns.
3. Step 3 - Run the first 100
They come back in seconds, so you can check the matches look right before you run the rest.
4. Step 4 - Enter a work email to run the rest
The other 9,900 rows run in batches of 100\. Keep the tab open; the counter shows how far it has got.
5. Step 5 - Download or map
Download CSV gives latitude, longitude, a status and a confidence score for every row. Or open the whole list as a live map.

## How long does 10,000 addresses take?

It depends mostly on how many rows are US addresses, since those run on our own address data. Here are real full-list runs from October 2026:

| List size | US rows placed | Time |
| ---------- | -------------- | ----------------- |
| 1,726 rows | 1,659 | About 2 minutes |
| 1,773 rows | 1,446 | About 3.5 minutes |
| 6,727 rows | 4,765 | About 25 minutes |

## What that means for your 10,000

Based on those runs, expect roughly 10 to 40 minutes for 10,000 rows: nearer 10 for a clean US list, longer when many rows are incomplete or outside the US. The run happens in your browser tab, so do not close it until the counter finishes.

If a run stops partway, you keep the rows already done. Upload the remaining rows as a new list.

## The free limits

These are the limits the geocoder enforces:

1. US addresses with a work email: the whole list, up to 20,000 rows per list and 25,000 US addresses a day per person.
2. US addresses without an email: the first 100 rows of each list, up to 1,000 a day.
3. Addresses outside the US: a daily free allowance, smaller than the US one.
4. More than 25,000 in a day: split the file across days, or [ask for a free pilot](/pro-geocoder) with a higher limit.

## Check 10,000 results without reading 10,000 rows

Sort the downloaded CSV by the confidence column. Green rows are placed on the house from a published address point. Yellow rows are estimated along the street from its house-number range, usually within 80 meters. Red rows need checking.

The geocoder lists the failed and approximate rows under the results. Fix the typos or missing ZIPs there and re-run only those rows, instead of uploading 10,000 again.

Then open the list on a map. A pin in the wrong state or in the ocean shows up faster on a map than in a spreadsheet.

## Other free and paid ways to geocode 10,000 addresses

Two alternatives are worth knowing, with their published limits:

| InstaMaps geocoder | US Census batch geocoder | Google Geocoding API | |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Cost for 10,000 | Free (US addresses) | Free | Free for the first 10,000 a month, then $5 per 1,000 |
| Per file or list | Up to 20,000 rows | Up to 10,000 records per batch file | One request per address |
| Input | Any CSV or Excel layout | Fixed columns: ID, street, city, state, ZIP | Your own code and an API key with billing |
| Confidence per row | Yes, with a note on how it was placed | Match type (exact or non-exact) | Location type per result |
| Map of the results | Yes, a live map link | No | No, you build it |

## Keeping 10,000 addresses in Google Sheets

If the list lives in Google Sheets and grows every week, geocode it in the sheet. The free [InstaMaps add-on](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/instamaps/103204565785?utm%5Fsource=get-instamaps&utm%5Fmedium=site&utm%5Fcampaign=content) has =GEOCODE() for ranges up to 400 rows, and Extensions, InstaMaps, Add coordinates to this sheet for bigger ranges, with no formula time limit.

For a one-off 10,000-row file, the web geocoder is quicker: one upload, one download.

Do I need an API key to geocode 10,000 addresses?

Not with the web geocoder or the Census batch geocoder. Google's Geocoding API needs an API key with billing turned on.

Can the Census geocoder do 10,000 addresses?
